4 Easy Ideas for Shade Gardens

I wanted to plant colorful, joyful flowers when I started gardening. I found shade gardens too sleepy. We won’t discuss how much garden experience I’ve gained, but I love shadow gardens.

Though quieter, they can be as striking as a flower bed. At least remotely. Approach a shade garden to witness its extraordinary textures, hues, and nuances that a sun garden cannot match.

Shade gardens provide tranquility. Maybe that “experience” makes us examine the specifics. Not everything is big picture. Ah, wisdom. How to plant a shade garden with displayable ideas!

SHADE GARDEN IDEAS

There are some beautiful examples of color and contrast in shade gardens in “Bressingham Gardens.” See below for an example of how using different colors of the same plant, Hostas, can make things stand out and also bring them together.

I love how the Hostas make the shade yard look like a river. When used this way, mass planting works really well.

The bright green Japanese Hakone grass and the deep purple Heuchera in the second picture look great next to each other because their leaves are so different from each other.

SHADE GARDEN DESIGN

To enjoy the peace and quiet of shade gardens, you could also add a place to rest, like a bench or seat. It makes the room feel calm and gives it a focal point. There is also a chance to get a better look at the shade garden’s features. Plus, it’s nice to be out of the sun!

SHADE LANDSCAPING IDEAS

If you want to use a path through your yard for shade, here are two ideas from “BHG.” The first one finishes at a small seating area, which gives you a place to walk to.

I love how this shade garden has depth thanks to the different levels of height. Tall trees come first, then small trees, then bushes, and finally perennials. Great plan for the garden!

FLOWERS FOR SHADE GARDENS

A yard in the shade doesn’t have to be green either. This garden from “BHG” shows how to use bright flowers to make things look better. These are pink and red Astilbe.

It’s easy to grow asters, but they do best in rich, wet soil with some shade. Most of them bloom in early summer.
