1. Picking the Right Place
Light that comes from the side helps Desert Rose grow well. If you’re growing it inside, put it near a south-facing window so it gets at least six hours of sunshine every day. If you are outside, pick a spot that gets full sun or some shade. The plant can handle high temperatures, but it needs to be kept safe from frost, so if you live in a cooler area, bring it inside during the winter.
2. Needs of the soil
To keep its roots from rotting, the Desert Rose needs dirt that drains well. To make your own, mix potting soil, sand, and perlite or pumice in equal amounts. A cactus or plant mix is best. This keeps the earth loose and airy, just like in the plant’s natural environment.
3. Adding water
An important part of taking care of a Desert Rose is giving it water. As the plant grows (spring and summer), give it lots of water when the top inch of soil feels dry. When the plant goes into dormancy in the fall and winter, water it much less. Too much water can cause root rot, so let the dirt dry out between waterings.
4. Planting seeds
A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer reduced to half strength should be used to feed your Desert Rose every four to six weeks while it is growing. This will help the plants grow well and have bright flowers. During the fall and winter, when plants are dormant, don’t fertilize them.
5. Cutting back and repotting
Pruning your Desert Rose keeps it in shape and helps it grow new leaves. Take off any weak or dead branches in early spring, before the growth season starts. Every two to three years, in the spring, you should repot the plant with new soil and a slightly bigger pot.
6. Bugs and sickness
Pests don’t bother the Desert Rose too much, but mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids do sometimes come to it. Check the plant often for pests and use insecticidal soap or neem oil to get rid of them. Root rot and other plant diseases can be avoided by not watering too much.
7. Making a noise
You can grow more Desert Rose from seeds or seedlings. You should take cuttings in the spring or early summer and let them dry for a day before putting them in soil that drains well. Keep the dirt just wet until roots start to grow.
If you follow these steps, you should be able to grow a beautiful and healthy Desert Rose that will be the center of attention in your yard or home.
