Jeera Rice, which is sometimes referred to as Cumin Rice, is a dish that is very fragrant and savory, and it goes exceptionally well with a variety of Indian curries and dals. In order to ensure that every grain of basmati rice is cooked to perfection and infused with the warm tastes of cumin and whole spices, this dish makes use of the Instant Pot, which allows for a faster and more straightforward preparation process.
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice (200 grams)
- 1¼ cups water (300 ml)
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
- 1 bay leaf
- 3 whole green cardamom pods
- 3 cloves
- 1 green chili, slit (optional)

Instructions
To ensure that the water is clear, the basmati rice should be washed under cold water four to five times. In this stage, surplus starch is removed, which contributes to the creation of fluffy rice. The rice should be drained and then placed aside.
Once the Instant Pot is turned on, pick the sauté function from the menu. When it is heated, mix in the oil or ghee. Add the cumin seeds, bay leaf, cardamom pods, cloves, and green chile to the oil once it has reached the desired temperature. For around one minute, sauté the spices until they release their aroma.
After the basmati rice has been drained, add it to the pot and stir it gently for about thirty seconds so that the spices may make contact with the rice. To the water, add salt, and then pour it in. Be careful not to break the rice grains as you gently stir the ingredients together.
Please ensure that the steam release handle is set to the sealing position before closing the lid of the Instant Pot. Set the timer for five minutes at high pressure, and then select either the manual or pressure cook setting on the appliance.
Following the completion of the cooking time, set the steam release handle to venting and allow the pressure to escape naturally for a period of two minutes. After that, perform a fast release by moving the steam release handle.
Take care when opening the lid. A fork should be used to gently fluff the rice in order to separate the grains. Before you serve it, let it a few minutes to finish resting. As an accompaniment to your preferred curry or dal, serve the jeera rice while it is still warm, and if you so choose, garnish it with fresh coriander.

Tips
If you want the greatest flavor and texture, use basmati rice that has been matured for a long time. The water-to-rice ratio might need to be adjusted for rice that has just been harvested.
A critical factor is the ratio of rice to water. To ensure that the rice is cooked to perfection, it is recommended to use a ratio of 1:1.25 (rice to water). Adjust according to whether you prefer rice that is softer or rice that is tougher.
We encourage you to add additional spices, such as black peppercorns or a cinnamon stick, in order to enhance the flavor of the dish. Do not stir the rice too aggressively once it has been added to the pot. This will avoid the rice from becoming mushy.
