Paris 2024 Paralympics Record number of delegations, best percentage of women represented... another step towards parity

Paris 2024 Paralympics | Record number of delegations, best percentage of women represented… another step towards parity :- As of this Friday, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) released new numbers that set a new standard for gender equality at the Paris 2024 Olympics. As with the Olympics, more and more women will be competing, even though there will be a lot more guys.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will change the way women play sports in a big way! One thousand eight hundred and ninety-three women will be competing in 22 sports in the French city.

In comparison, this is 45% of all the competitors, which beats the previous record of 42%, set at Tokyo 2020 with 1,846 women out of 4,393 athletes. In 2000, 988 female athletes came to Australia for the Olympics in Sydney. This is more than twice that amount.

On top of that, women will compete in 235 of the 549 medal sports that are planned. Eight more than in Tokyo 2020.

As of 2016, the IPC has invested millions of euros every year in Paralympic sport development projects with our member organisations, with a real focus on getting more women to compete at all levels. This makes IPC President Andrew Parsons very happy.

Together with the great work of our National Paralympic Committees and foreign federations, these efforts are starting to pay off and are setting new records.

At Paris 2024, there will be more women than men in Para horse (61 women vs. 17 men) and Para powerlifting (90 women vs. 89 men). There is complete equality in wheelchair basketball, para badminton, goalball, and para rowing.

A new high number of delegates are taking part.

If 164 nations took part in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, then even more have done so in Paris 2024. Out of the 4,400 players, 168 National Paralympic Committees will be there, along with the Paralympic Refugee Team.

Eritrea, Kiribati, and Kosovo are the three new countries that will be sending their first paralympic teams to the Paris 2024 Games.

“The IPC is always working to work with its members to move the Paralympic Movement forward. It’s great news that the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will have a record number of competing delegations and female athletes.”

“We should honour our NPCs and international federations for their hard work, especially the three NPCs who will be competing in their first Paralympics in Paris,” says Andrew Parsons.
